I am very happy country and to discover how people behave, think and act daily. First interesting cultural shock is the way peolpe smile everytime they meet you without showing any sign of going further in discussions with you. In my country, when you smile with somebody, it means that you know him/her and that you are happy to see him. But here, it simply shows that you are trying to be nice to the person ( not hostile by sight). I consider this atitude like hypocrisis because it does not mean that the person likes you or is happy to meet you. This is just a habit that create cultural shock for me. Yet, it is not bad as such like an attitude; I do appreciate that people smile with me even if they don t really mean it maybe because it is pleasant and provoque the same reaction in me - I smile back to them. So this is definetely a positive cultural shock!!!
Second weird thing which is not totally positive yet is the talk we had with professor Delayne about cultural shocks. I learned a lot about Americans way of living and thinking and even tolerance regarding some social issues. And I was amazingly surprised about how comfortable the american society in general........this will be the next weird thing in my blogger. I have to do Harold s homeworks.

I just saw an interesting TED talk on the benefits of smiling; I hope to show it in class if we have time.
ReplyDeleteKeep noticing - and thinking about - the differences between cultures. It's a first step in dealing with the inevitable culture shock that you'll experience during your stay here.
